How to build a simple marketing pipeline that brings in consistent clients

If you're anything like the coaches and consultants I work with, you've probably had this thought at some point.

"Maybe I just need to post more on LinkedIn."

Or perhaps...

"Everyone keeps telling me I need to start a podcast."
"Should I finally get on Instagram?"
"Maybe I need to run ads."

In my experience, marketing usually isn't the problem. The problem is what happens after someone finds you.

I've seen business owners create brilliant content every week, network consistently and have plenty of conversations with potential clients. Yet they're still wondering where the next client is coming from.

The problem is usually because their marketing doesn't flow.

It's a bit like trying to water your garden with a hose that's full of holes. The water is coming out. Just not where you need it.

Most businesses don't need more marketing. They need fewer leaks.

Marketing should create a flow, not just activity

Marketing isn't about being everywhere. It isn't about ticking boxes or keeping up with whatever platform everyone is talking about this month.

It's about creating a simple flow that moves people from discovering you to becoming happy clients who come back and recommend you to others.

When one part of that flow is missing, people disappear.

They enjoy your content. They agree with what you say. They even think, "I should get in touch one day." Then three weeks later they've forgotten your name, because there was nowhere for the relationship to go.

The marketing circle

I've found that every successful marketing system includes four simple stages.

Stage 1: Get Attention

You need to be bringing new people into your world.

That could be showing up via:

  • LinkedIn

  • Networking

  • Speaking events

  • Podcasts

  • Referrals

  • SEO

  • Guest articles

  • Workshops

  • Letters in mail boxes

  • Strategic partnerships

Choose the activities that suit your personality, strengths and the way you enjoy working. And match where your clients are hanging out.

If dancing on Instagram fills you with dread...

Don't do it.

There isn't a prize for using every marketing channel. The best marketing is the marketing you'll actually keep doing.

Stage 2: Nurture

This is the stage many businesses skip.

Someone reads your LinkedIn post. They like what you have to say.

Then...

They scroll away.

If you haven't given them a reason to stay connected, you've lost them. That's why you need something that encourages people to take the next step.

It could be:

  • A free guide

  • A quiz

  • A checklist

  • .A newsletter

  • A webinar

  • A discovery call

  • Social media content

  • Blogs

The goal isn't to sell immediately but to continue the conversation. Very few people decide to work with you the first time they come across your business.

People buy when they trust you and trust builds over time.

That's why staying in touch matters - they’re regular reminders that you understand their challenges and know how to solve them (not endless sales pitches).

Stage 3: Retain

Getting the client isn't the finish line. It's the beginning. Make sure you provide ongoing or maintenance programmes, re-engage with old clients or offer something new that solves a problem your clients share.

Stage 4: Referral

When you deliver an outstanding experience, people come back. They tell their colleagues. They refer friends and they become your biggest advocates.

Some of the easiest business you'll ever win comes from people who already know, like and trust you. Yet so many businesses spend all their energy chasing new leads while forgetting the people they've already helped.

Do the marketing that suits you

One of the biggest myths I see is the idea that there's one "right" way to market your business.

There isn't.

If you love networking, network. If you enjoy writing, write. If you'd rather speak than post on social media, look for podcast interviews or speaking opportunities.

Your marketing doesn't need to look like someone else's. It just needs to move people through the flow.

Where are the leaks in your business?

If your marketing feels hard work, don't assume you need another platform, another strategy or another course.

Ask yourself where people are dropping out.
Are they finding you?
Are they staying connected?
Are they building trust with you?
Are they becoming loyal clients who refer others?

In my experience, that's where the real answers are. Because once your marketing starts to flow, attracting consistent clients becomes a whole lot easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be on every social media platform?

No. Focus on the marketing activities that suit your strengths and put you in front of your ideal clients consistently. Consistency on one or two channels is far more effective than trying to be everywhere.

What if I don't like social media?

That's completely fine. Networking, speaking, referrals, podcasts, SEO, email marketing and partnerships can all attract new clients. The best strategy is one you'll actually enjoy and stick with.

Why isn't posting regularly bringing me clients?

Posting creates awareness, but awareness alone doesn't generate clients. If you don't capture people's details or continue building the relationship, they'll often forget about you before they're ready to buy.

What's the best way to improve my marketing?

The most productive way to improve your marketing is to take a step back. To validate what you think your clients need so you have evidence of exactly who they are and what they want to invest in -once you’ve got sorted, then move onto marketing.
